Biography
India is a descendent from the Cole fairground showmen family of Southampton. After graduating from her BA (Hons) in Photography at The Arts University Bournemouth, she obtained an MA in Photographic Studies at Westminster University, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and an MA in Education at Oxford Brookes University.
India has worked at Southampton Solent Univeristy since 2016 where she has taught Photography, Interior Design and Decoration, Prosthetics and Special Effects, and supervised dissertations for BA (Hons) on Hair and Make-up Design. As at 2025, India is the Deputy Head (Education) for the Art and Music Department at Southampton Solent University, where she is also a senior lecturer, and course coordinator and she is undertaking a practice-based photography PhD. India is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).
India’s photographic practice often draws on personal history, memory, and collaboration. Her project Lineage: A Personal and Collaborative Journey into the History of Southampton’s Showman Community was inspired by British Art Show 8’s presence in Southampton. Created in collaboration with her family and students from Winchester School of Art, the work brings together photographs and archival material. Through collecting and sharing these stories, the work opens up a glimpse into the lives, histories, and traditions of the funfair, allowing this heritage to be shared with a wider audience. India’s photographic work has been exhibited locally, nationally and internationally. She has been invited to various universities as a guest lecturer, worked in visual merchandising, and was an art ambassador for British Art Show 8.
