Biography

A controversial figure whose personal life overshadowed his acting and his management roles. After being a resident of Sheffield on Campo Lane, he was declared bankrupt in December 1826. He was married at least twice as he married Frances Neville (1793-1833) who had 7 children and Mary Anna Gartside Neville (1810-1895) who had 2 children. He fathered twenty children in total. His youngest son, Thomas Henry Gartside Neville (known more widely as Henry) became a successful theatre manager, actor, dramatist and teacher.
