Hammond, W. J., 1799 - [?]
Dates
- Existence: Born 1799
Biography
He made his debut as “Figaro” in “The Barber of Seville” in 1826 and quickly turned to management. After taking over the Liver theatre, in partnership with Richard Malone Raymond, he found that his partner had not renewed the license of the theatre. Afterwards, he opened the Strand Theatre in London and managed the ‘Theatre Royal’ in Hull. He returned to Liverpool in 1846 and converted the old Olympic Circus and opened the ‘Theatre Royal Adelphi’. Although no official records exist, Hammond’s name appears at the top of several playbills from the early 1830’s, suggesting he undertook the management role at the Theatre, Sheffield. He also acted in numerous plays and sung.
