Biography

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, she was discovered when singing and was advised to become a professional actress. She instantly found rave reviews for her portrayal of Lady Macbeth. There was controversy when she became involved in a lesbian affair with Matilda Hays. Her later years saw her become a dramatic reader, before dying of pneumonia aged 59. She was elected to the New York University Hall of Fame in 1915.
