Biography
Alexander Monteith Currie was the Registrar and Secretary at The University of Sheffield from August 1965 to 1978. He was born in Scotland and joined the Royal Navy in 1944 serving as a coder in the Signals branch. After he left the Navy he enrolled at the University College of Bangor where he was awarded a first in English Language and Literature in 1949. He went on to read for a BLitt and study at Oxford. From 1952 to 1961 he took administrative roles at the University of Manchester, was Secretary of the Faculty of Arts from 1954, and for four years Extension and W.E.A. tutor in Literature in the Manchester area. He was a founder in the early 1960's of the Conference of University Administrators and was made its first Honorary Member when he retired. He had been a member of the Northern Universities Joint Matriculation Board and Chairman of its Matriculation Committee. He served on the committees of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principles and acted as Chairman of Scottish secretaries. He presented at numerous British Council courses on university administration and held training workshops globally. In 1978 he returned to Scotland as Secretary to the University of Edinburgh until his retirement in 1979. Currie received an honorary degree (LLD) from the University of Sheffield on 6 December 1991.
