Biography

Giancarlo de Carlo (1919-2005) was an Italian architect, planner, writer and educator. He was a critic of what he saw as the failure of architecture in the twentieth century and was one of the founding members of Team X (Team 10), a group of architects challenging modernist doctrines of the International Congresses of Modern Architectures (CIAM). De Carlo was active in the Italian anti-fascist resistance as well as the post-war Italian anarchist movement.

Much of de Carlo's built work is located in Urbino, a small Italian town for which he proposed a master plan between 1958-1964, and includes designing the campus of the University of Urbino.

In 1976, De Carlo founded the ILAUD (International Laboratory of Architecture and Urban Design), based on the principles of Team X, which for 27 years took place every summer in Italy, in order to carry out continuous research in the evolution of architecture. In 1978, he founded the magazine 'Space and Society'.

De Carlo died in Milan in 2005.
