Biography

Thomas Hosmer Shepherd was a British artist born on 16 January 1793. He was the brother of topographical artist George ‘Sidney’ Shepherd and Thomas himself worked as a topographical and architectural artist.

Thomas produced many iconic views of London, Edinburgh, Bath and Bristol on watercolour and easel painting over the course of his career, which were used to produce engravings for printing on books and publications. Thomas' attention to detail and naturalistic and lively scenes made his work visually engaging and popular. He worked mostly for Frederick Crace, who employed him to create a record of old London buildings that were being lost, and publishers Jones & Co who commissioned him to create a series of city views entitled Metropolitan Improvement.

Thomas died in France in 1864.
