Biography
Frederick Gustavus Burnaby was born in Bedford on 3 March 1842.
Frederick who possessed a great sense of adventure, became a British Army intelligence officer and gained celebrity for his adventures across Spain and Russia as well as his balloon ascents.
In 1874 he reported on the third Carlist War in Spain and General Gordon's expedition to the Sudan for The Times newspaper. Upon his return to England in 1875, he planned a journey on horseback to the Khanate of Khiva through Russian Asia, territory, which was closed to travellers due to war. Although it was an impossible mission, Frederick managed to reach his destination in early 1876. On his return to England in March that year, he was received by Prince George and hailed a hero by the British people, gaining much fame.
In 1879 he became involved in politics and the following year he unsuccessfully contested Birmingham in the Tory-Democrat interest, which was followed by a second failed attempt in 1885.
On 23 March 1882 he crossed the English Channel in a gas balloon. In 1884 he served an intelligence officer for General Valentine Baker in Soudan, where he was wounded. Later that year he joined up a similar expedition to the Nile where he died at the battle of Abu Klea on 17 January 1885.
