Biography

G.P. Barnes, better known as Peter Barnes, was a fairground enthusiast who reported on fairs and rallies for The World’s Fair in the Home Counties for well over 30 years. Peter was one of the Word's Fairs' senior freelance correspondents from the 1960s until his death in 2002. He was based at Penn, near to High Wycombe, Bucks, and reported o fairs, traction engine rallies and related matters in the Thames Valley. His area encompassed the counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Middlesex, Oxforshire and Surrey. It is believed that his father had been the editor of a locla newspaper and it is possible that Peter himself may have worked there when he was young. He rarely took photographs to accompany his articles but worked with other enthusiasts who supplied him with images instead. His deep knowledge of the fairs he reported on gained him respect among the enthusiast and showmen communities alike.
