Biography

Alec Daykin (1918-2010) was a student in the School of Architecture at the University of Sheffield from 1935 to 1940, and after service in the Second World War returned to the University as a member of staff. A major project was his design for the conversion of Shearwood Road Baptist Church into the University of Sheffield´s Drama Studio in 1970. One of Alec Daykin´s interests was in the design of theatre sets and costumes which he produced for the University Staff Dramatic Society, the Student Drama Group and the Departments of Music, German and French. A further role was as architect and surveyor on some eleven archaeological expeditions, including the excavations at Sabratha (1948-1951), the excavation of the site of the monument of the Victory at Samothrace (1950-1953) and the expedition to Orkney with Professor Colin Renfrew (later Lord Kaimsthorn) (1972-1974). Alec Daykin retired from the University of Sheffield in 1983, and died in May 2010.

Scope and Contents The collection consists of a variety of architectural drawings, including around 45 produced during Alec Daykin´s student years from 1935 to 1940. There are also drawings relating to the visit of Queen Elizabeth II to the University of Sheffield in 1954 and to the conversion of Shearwood Road Baptist Church into the University of Sheffield´s Drama Studio in 1970.
