Scott, Walter, 1843 - 1909
Biography
Walter Scott, was the grandfather of Renee Marshall (nee Scott).
Walter appeared before Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle when he was only sixteen years old. He travelled his circus extensively in Great Britain and Ireland, under the Scott's Circus name, until a command performance before Queen Victoria, on 18th September 1898, when it was renamed the Royal Scott's Circus. Walter Scott married Rebecca Humberstone Freeman Biddall and had eleven children. Elizabeth (1870-1953), Harriet (1874-1921), Lena, Rose (died 1924), Lily, Emma (1878-1914), John (1885-1956), William, Richard (1880-1942), George (1881-1910) and Walter.
All their children married into showland families; the eldest daughter, Elizabeth, married 'Ned' Hanneford from the Hanneford’s circus family. Harriet married James Day (1862-1942), of Day's Menagerie. Lena married Bob Yelding, an equestrian performer. Rose married a tent man of the White family. Lily married the circus performer Leslie Ridley, and Emma married Charles Beckett, also a performer under the big top. John Henry (1886-1956) married Emily Mary ‘Emma’ Baker (1887-1961) and William married Priscilla Baker, both daughters of Tom and Eliza Baker of circus fame. Walter junior died a ten year old infant in Ireland.
Walter Scott senior died suddenly, on the road, on 18th July 1909, aged 66. After his death, the family continued to work together until John Henry formed his own circus and started to travel it to Ireland.
