Biography

The Savoy Cinema in Swaythiling, Southampton was built in the late 1930s in the Art Deco style. It was designed by Colin Farmer and built for owner Louis Zeid. It opened its doors to the public on 10 November 1938 showing Bette Davis in 'Jezebel'.

Originally it had a 1,500 seating capacity, which as audiences dwindled was reduced to just over 1,000.

The Savoy Cinema closed down on 28 March 1959, the last screening was David Lean’s 'Bridge on the River Kwai'. The building was demolished in 1961.
