Circus Barum was founded by German animal trader Carl Froese (1853 to 1907) in 1878 as Barums Amerikanische Karawanen-Menagerie.

Circus Barum adopted several names through its history including Circus Safari in 1970, Circus Barum-Safari in 1971 and Circus Simoneit-Barum in 1972.

After Carl’s death in 1907, his daughter Helene and her husband Arthur Kreiser took over the management of the circus and in 1935 ownership passed to the third generation of the family, Margarete Kreiser-Barum (1902 to 1970), who became one of the best well know German circus owners of her time. In 1972, Circus Barum was bought by animal trainer Simoneit, who renamed the circus Simoneit-Barum. The Simoneit family retained ownership of Circus Simoneit-Barum until its closure in 2008.
