Biography

The Carl Hagenbeck Circus was founded by menagerie owner and animal trainer and trader Carl Hagenbeck (1844-1913), in c1893. Carl trained his own circus animals and presented successful shows at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893 and the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in 1904. In 1907 American circus empresario B.E. Wallace bought the Carl Hagenbeck Circus and merged it with his own circus, forming the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus, inspite Carl's opposition to the use of his name. The Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus was struck by devastating tragedies twice before it was absorved by the American Circus Company a couple of years after its inception.
